Production details

Typical clients at AnNead Knitwear often are people looking for a hand-knitted lace shawl, wrap, stole or scarf which is a bit different. Bespoke christening shawls and bridal shawls are custom made. The production process involves sourcing local raw wool, which is Shetland fleece from sheep on Eigg, kept by Glebe Barn. This is then washed, combed and carded, before some is dyed using natural dyes. Kid mohair is sourced from New Forest Mohair, a farm with high animal husbandry standards which is also dyed using natural dyes. Colours and the different fibres are then blended on the carder ready to be hand-spun into yarn which she then knits into cobweb lace. No two items are ever the same and measurements are always approximate due to the nature of the materials. Customers should come with a timeframe in mind when producing a custom piece.

History

AnNead Knitwear was set up because I wanted to provide an income doing something I really enjoy. I have been doing this now for about 5 years using traditional and contemporary lace patterns, although the spinning is more recent and now I dye my fleeces with natural dyes. The fleece used is now Shetland from Eigg, although I do have some products still knitted in British Lavender from a rare breeds farm in Dorset. The kid mohair component comes from New Forest Mohair, a farm with high animal husbandry standards in the UK.
